EXPERIENCE LEVELS & CATEGORIES

In this edition of the festival competition, participants can compete across three experience levels, DESERT SPARK, DESERT MUSE & DESERT LEGEND. Kindly note the categories for each level and register for the one suitable for you. 

DESERT SPARK
(Amateur / Intermediate)
Categories

ORIENTAL ONLY (Arabic Pop, Mejance, Classical Song, Modern Oriental)

Experience

1 – 3 years of bellydance training

Eligibility

This level is intended for students and developing dancers who are still building their technique and stage experience. This level celebrates emerging dancers who are developing their technique, stage presence, and artistry.

Participants in this level typically:

• Train regularly in bellydance classes but are not professional performers
• May have performed in student showcases, haflas, or small events
• Do not teach bellydance classes
• Do not earn regular income through bellydance
• May have participated in competitions but have not won major professional titles

This level is not suitable for dancers who:

• Teach bellydance classes regularly
• Perform professionally at restaurants, events, or festivals
• Have extensive stage experience

Time Limit: 2.5 – 3 minutes

 
DESERT MUSE 
(Advanced level / Semi-Professional)
Categories (choose any one or multiple categories)

ORIENTAL (Mejance, Classic songs, Modern oriental, Arabic pop songs interpreted in Raqs Sharqi style)

BALADI / SHA'ABI (Traditional Baladi progressions, Accordion-based Baladi music, Egyptian Shaabi, Street Shaabi)

FOLKLORE (Saidi, Nubian, Fellahi, Hagalla, Ghawazee, Eskandarani, Muwashahat, Khaliji, Iraqi, Dabke, Bedouin)

Experience

3 – 5 years of bellydance training

Eligibility

This category is for dancers who are actively performing and developing a professional presence, but who are not yet fully established professional artists. 
 

Participants in this category typically:

• Perform paid gigs occasionally (restaurants, events, cultural programs)
• May teach beginner classes or workshops part-time
• Have 3 - 5 years of consistent training
• Have experience performing on stage at festivals, haflas, or showcases
• May have competed previously in competitions

This level is appropriate for dancers who are transitioning from student to professional level.

This level is not suitable for dancers who:

• Teach bellydance full-time
• Perform professionally on a regular basis
• Are internationally recognized performers

Time Limit: 2.5 - 3 minutes

 
DESERT LEGEND
(Professional)
Categories & Rounds

All participants in this category must take part in all three rounds listed below.

Winner will be based on the highest average scorer of all three rounds.

ROUND 1 :

ORIENTAL (Mejance, Classic songs, Modern oriental,

Arabic pop songs interpreted in Raqs Sharqi style)

ROUND 2 :

BALADI / SHA'ABI (Traditional Baladi progressions, Accordion-based Baladi music,

Egyptian Shaabi, Street Shaabi)

ROUND 3 :

FOLKLORE (Saidi, Nubian, Fellahi, Hagalla, Ghawazee, Eskandarani,

Muwashahat, Khaliji, Iraqi, Dabke, Bedouin)

Experience

5+ years of training or established professional career

Eligibility

This category is intended for experienced professional dancers and teachers.

Participants in this category typically:

• Teach bellydance regularly or full-time
• Perform professionally at restaurants, festivals, weddings, or stage productions
• Have significant stage experience
• May have won previous competition titles
• Are recognized performers in the dance community
• May travel nationally or internationally to perform or teach

This category also includes:

• Professional teachers
• International guest artists
• Established performers with professional dance careers

Time Limit: 2.5 - 3 minutes

 

 

Performances will be evaluated by a panel of judges.

Total Score: 100 Points

Technique – 30 Points

Judges evaluate:

• Body posture and alignment
• Isolation control
• Precision of movements
• Balance and transitions

Musicality – 30 Points

Judges evaluate:

• Interpretation of rhythm and melody
• Ability to follow musical accents
• Expression of musical phrasing
• Connection to lyrics when applicable

Choreography & Stage Use – 25 Points

Judges evaluate:

• Structure of the choreography
• Creativity and artistic choices
• Use of stage space
• Flow and transitions

Stage Presence & Expression – 10 Points

Judges evaluate:

• Confidence and charisma
• Emotional expression
• Audience engagement

Costume & Presentation – 5 Points

Judges evaluate:

• Costume suitability for the dance style
• Professional appearance
• Overall visual presentation

To maintain the authenticity of each dance style, participants must select music that corresponds to their registered category.Music that does not match the category may result in score deductions or disqualification.

 
ORIENTAL (Raqs Sharqi)

This category represents Egyptian stage bellydance.

Requirements

  • Music must correspond to the chosen folklore style

  •  Costume must reflect the tradition

General Competition Rules

• Participants must register in the level that best reflects their training and professional experience. The organizers reserve the right to reassign a participant to a more appropriate level if necessary.

• Music must match the registered category (Oriental, Baladi / Sha’abi, or Folklore). Music that does not correspond to the category may result in point deductions or disqualification.

• Music must be submitted in high-quality MP3 format before the deadline announced by the organizers.

• Costumes must be appropriate for the dance style and category.

• Props may only be used if they are culturally appropriate to the dance style. Dangerous props such as fire or hazardous objects are not permitted.

• Participants must check in at least 30 minutes before their category begins. Missing your turn may result in disqualification.

• The organizers reserve the right to merge categories or adjust the schedule if necessary.

• All performances will be evaluated by a panel of judges using the official scoring system. Judges’ decisions are final.

• By participating in the competition, dancers agree that their performances may be photographed or recorded for festival promotion and documentation.

Additional Rules to Note

• The same choreography may not be performed in multiple categories during the competition.

• Participants must ensure their music begins and ends cleanly. The sound technician will play the file as submitted and will not edit music during the event.

• Teachers and their direct students are discouraged from competing in the same level and category where possible. The organizers may adjust placements to maintain fairness.

• Any participant displaying unsportsmanlike conduct toward judges, organizers, or fellow competitors may be disqualified.
